(HKR-04-04-23) Joanne Segovia, executive of the San Jose Police Union, was accused of drug dealing. This sparked discussions about the department’s history. Raj Jayadev, founder of Silicon Valley De-Bug, spoke with Davey D on Hard Knock Radio. They discussed Segovia’s case and the San Jose Police’s contradictory response. Segovia allegedly used the union’s mailing system to distribute drugs nationwide.
Background on Silicon Valley De-Bug
Silicon Valley De-Bug is a community organizing and advocacy group based in San Jose, California. The organization provides a platform for marginalized communities to tell their stories and advocate for social justice. Their website, debugsjs.org, features articles, videos, and podcasts on topics ranging from police brutality to immigrant rights.
Contradictions of the San Jose Police
Jayadev criticized the San Jose Police for pushing harsh sentences for drug crimes while being surprised by internal drug dealing. He pointed out their hypocrisy, as they had worked to criminalize drug users and dealers. Despite this, someone within their own ranks was allegedly involved in drug distribution.
He also questioned how the San Jose Police Union sought more funding and resources to fight crime. Yet, they failed to notice significant drug dealing happening under their noses. Jayadev raised concerns about who else in the department might have been aware of the illegal activity.
Commemorating Martin Luther King’s Death
Later on in the show, Hard Knock Radio commemorated the death date of Martin Luther King by playing one of his speeches. This segment provided a poignant reminder of the ongoing struggle for civil rights and social justice in America.
