In a recent episode of Hard Knock Radio, we had the privilege of engaging in a thought-provoking conversation with a group of self-proclaimed Black Nerds, delving into the realms of Afrofuturism and sci-fi during the transformative year of 2023. Our esteemed guests included scholar/author/artist Kwadro Deterville, author/journalist Jenee Darden, educator/fitness trainer Osa Tyimba, educator/artist Ras Ceylon, and educator Constance Rice.
The dialogue kicked off with a discussion on the power of imagination and its connection to revolution and liberation struggles. Kwadro Deterville provided insight, drawing parallels from current situations in Burkina Faso and Niger. The conversation then shifted to the Star Trek series, specifically Star Trek Discovery, highlighting the groundbreaking role of Michael Burnham played by the talented Sonequa Chaunté Martin-Green.
Addressing the Marvels movie, our guests touched upon the underplayed brilliance of certain actors and the significance of the series Ms. Marvel. Osa Tyimba praised the advancements in animation, citing movies like Mile Morales Across the Spiderverse and Ninja Turtles as game-changers. Scavenger Reign, an animated series, received special attention from Constance Rice.
The adaptation of Octavia Butler’s Kindred and Boots Riley’s ‘I’m a Virgo’ were scrutinized, with Ras Ceylon emphasizing Afrofuturistic themes and social messages in Riley’s work. The conversation also delved into the complexities of Hollywood, drawing attention to the treatment of actor Jonathan Majors compared to Ezra Miller, prompting reflections on the industry’s inherent biases.
The discussion concluded by looking ahead to 2024, contemplating the steps needed to overcome the limitations imposed by Hollywood. As we navigate the intersection of imagination, representation, and societal challenges, the Black Nerds offered profound insights into the evolving landscape of Afrofuturism and sci-fi.
