Long-time journalist and organizer Frank Sterling recently appeared on Hard Knock Radio to discuss the troubling controversies surrounding the Antioch Police Department. Sterling revealed that officers exchanged racist, homophobic, and threatening text messages for ten years. The FBI and other federal agencies monitoring the department discovered these messages, including officers threatening the city’s African American mayor Lamar Thorpe.
Sterling shared his own violent encounter with Antioch police when they came to his home over a noise complaint. Officers brutally beat and kicked him while directing homophobic and racial slurs his way. Sterling was then arrested and taken to a county jail in Martinez, CA, where he and his friends were further brutalized. Sterling still bears the scars from the beating and has spoken out regularly against the Antioch police department, seeking fundamental change.
According to Sterling, Rick Hoffman, the officer who beat him, has been promoted through the ranks and is currently the head of the Antioch Police Officers Union. Sterling suspects that the FBI may uncover racist and homophobic texts written by Hoffman as well. Furthermore, the Mayor has called for the immediate firing of the 30 officers involved in these recent text message controversies, which is over 20% of the entire force.
Sterling’s interview highlighted the corrupt and racist nature of the Antioch Police Department. He noted that many of text messages contained racially hostile language as officers who beat and brutalized Black folks would celebrate. Over 1000 cases may be tainted due to the department’s apparent racial and homophobic biases. The situation underscores the importance of police reform and the need to address systemic racism within law enforcement. Sterling reminds us that journalists and organizers like him play a vital role in bringing these issues to light and holding those in power accountable for their actions.
In summary, the recent controversies surrounding the Antioch Police Department have brought to light years of troubling and potentially illegal behavior. Activists like Frank Sterling can help address these issues and work towards a more just and equitable system of law enforcement.
