(HKR-09-06-22) One of the best things to emerge on the Bay Area Hip Hop scene is the 4 member, Oakland-based group Femme Deadly Venoms. Two of the founding members, DJ Lady Fingaz and Aima the Dreamer, have been underrated fixtures for a number of years. Fingaz is a pull-no-punches turntablist who has put many a head to bed when it came to battling both as a solo DJ and as a member of the all-women’s collective The Peaches Crew. She added to her resume by becoming a dope producer. She’s put out an album showcasing her beat-making. And just when we thought we saw it all, Fingaz jumped on the mic and has shown to be a good vocalist who can ‘sang’. She is now a bonafide triple threat-DJ/Producer/ Singer.
Aima the Dreamer has been a top-tier, formidable emcee who has cut their teeth over the years being out and about in the Bay Area rap scene. Many have come to know Aima for being a shining emcee on notable projects and groups like; J-Boogie’s Dubtronic Science, The Mamaz, Goddess Alchemy Project, and Jazz Mafia’s Brass, Bows and Beats Hip-Hop Symphony. Later Aima would reach new heights on the group’s first two albums La Femme Deadly Venoms (2013) and Planet Femme (2015). Aima has long been one to deliver searing rhymes that addressed issues of the day. Rarely could Aima be accused of ‘rhyming for the sake of riddling’.
Newer members Breathless and Dakini Starr have added to the group’s lyrical prowess of the group as both are seasoned performers who cut their teeth in both spoken word and emcee circuits. Many see this latest iteration of Femme Deadly Venoms as a supergroup that is dedicated to being this generation’s Hip Hop Manifesto.
For those who think this is far-fetched, they may wanna think again as their first single Femmenomenon, was recently picked up and featured on the CBS show ‘The Equalizer’, which stars Hip Hop icon, Queen Latifah.
During our recent interview with the group, we spoke about their desire to put pertinent hard-hitting messages in their songs. It was noted that their new project Femmenomenon is a protest album as they have songs addressing important issues like Reproductive Rights, Women’s Equality, and Love. While the topics may be deeply layered, nothing comes across as preachy. This is a sold Hip Hop album as each person who touches the mic reminds us that they got bars and at any given moment can take your lunch money and leave your feelings hurt if you wanna get froggy and jump.
Lastly, we talked about the group’s upcoming album release party, which will take place this weekend… Check out the flyer with the info listed below.
