We talk with award-winning author Adam Mansbach about his new book ‘I Once Had a Brother‘. It’s a heart-wrenching, compelling tribute to his brother David who committed suicide back in 2011. In our interview, Adam talks about the unimaginable grieving process he endured. For those who don’t know, Mansbach’s biggest success as a writer was when his book Go the F– The Sleep was published. It happened around the same time as his brother left us. He described the challenge of being on the road and putting on a happy face and hoping that no one would publicly blindside him by bringing up David’s suicide.
Mansbach also spoke about his mother trying to get him to promise to not write about his brother’s death and how it was received once the book was published.
Lastly, we spoke about the style of writing Manbach choose when writing this book. It’s not your typical narrative. Instead, it’s a long poem. Mansbach spent a little over 3 weeks penning this book and talks about the range of emotions he went through during that process. We talk about mental health and depression and the many challenges folks are facing.
We start off the show with an update from Brooklyn Center Minneapolis. It’s a press conference attended by journalist Georgia Fort that focuses on the demands and next steps activists plan to take as they seek justice for Duante Wright who was killed by police.
