HKR-06-19-20 We speak with Trent Willis president of ILWU Local 10 (Longshoremen) about the Port of Oakland shut down in observance of Juneteenth.

Later we speak with Boots Riley about mass mobilizations happening across the country and ways to sustain this growing movement for Black lives and state accountability.

Then we hear from Dr. Shennette Garrett-Scott, a historian of gender, race, and capitalism. She explores the history of Juneteenth, also known as Juneteenth Independence Day or Freedom Day. It is the oldest known celebration commemorating the end of slavery in the United States.


Dating back to 1865, it was on June 19th Major Gen. Gordon Granger came to Galveston, Texas, to inform a reluctant community that President Abraham Lincoln, two years earlier, had abolished slavery in the U.S. In this segment, we’ll explore the history of Juneteenth and well expand our conversation of Juneteenth to include a case for reparations.
