In a recent episode of Hard Knock Radio, host Davey D engaged in a powerful discussion with musician and activist Tarik Kazaleh, known as Excentrik, and activist Walla Oriqat. The conversation centered around their initiative, Prosthetics for Palestine, which aims to provide essential prosthetic limbs to those injured during the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
Davey D opened the dialogue by highlighting the devastating humanitarian crisis in Gaza, with over 40,000 casualties and countless injuries due to the violence. He emphasized the urgent need to address the often-overlooked injuries sustained in war, particularly the need for prosthetics for the many amputees. “The injuries in war impact us all,” he stated, setting the tone for the importance of their project.
Tarik explained the initiative’s genesis, stating, “We felt extremely hopeless… we needed to be ahead of the game.” He described how their organization mobilizes resources to provide prosthetics to those affected, noting the grave conditions in Gaza, where medical supplies are scarce. “Save the life, not the limb” has become a grim reality for medical professionals, as they struggle to operate under dire circumstances, often without anesthesia.
Walla, who has a background in technology and philanthropy, expressed her commitment to aiding those in need. “I have a strong calling to help the people in need,” she said, reflecting on her family’s history of displacement. She highlighted the importance of collaboration with local organizations and leveraging technology to produce prosthetics efficiently. “We’re partnering with a company called Limber Prosthetics, who does 3D printing for prosthetic legs,” she explained, showcasing an innovative approach to a pressing problem.
The duo encouraged listeners to get involved by donating through their website, prostheticsforpalestine.org, and emphasized the importance of political advocacy alongside humanitarian efforts. Walla urged, “Learn the history about what’s happened to Palestinians over the last 76 years.” Tarik added, “This is a very tangible way of helping people on the ground,” underscoring the project’s direct impact on the lives of those in need.
As the conversation wrapped up, both activists expressed hope and determination in the face of adversity, calling for community engagement and support to ensure that those who have suffered from the conflict receive the care and resources they desperately need.
