On April 2nd, 2023, Chicago held its mayoral election, and the progressive candidate Brandon Johnson emerged victorious with 62% of the vote. Johnson, who previously served as a Cook County Commissioner and an organizer for the Chicago Teachers Union, ran on a platform that focused on issues such as affordable housing, police reform, and education.
Local activists, educators, journalists, and organizers recently gathered for a round table discussion on the election and the challenges that Johnson may face as the new mayor. The participants included David Stoval, an educator and author; Sean Butler (also known as Es Be), a former rap artist and current journalist for TriibeChicago; and La’Keisha Gray-Sewell, an author and girl’s advocate.
During the discussion, the participants noted that young voters played a significant role in Johnson’s victory, and that he was able to build a strong coalition that included people from various ethnic groups. The roundtable also discussed the challenges that Johnson might face as the new mayor, such as managing the city’s budget and implementing his policies effectively. Finally, the participants emphasized the importance of community support and accountability in ensuring that Johnson fulfills his promises and addresses the needs of all Chicago residents.
