We speak with author/ activist Dave Zirin from the Nation Magazine (Edge of Sports) and the Collison Radio show where Sports Meets Politics about his new documentary on the NFL. He breaks down the sordid details behind one of America’s most powerful institutions about how it started off being and continues to be a political tool to define American white male notions of manhood and patriotism. We talk about the marriage the NFL has to the military and how it has been an institution designed to depoliticize progressive politics while uplifting conservative values that reflect the interests of owners and some of the most influential people in the country..

OMG, This morning I was listening to
Not “A Nation of Immigrants” by Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz. As I thought about the expansion of the United States as a capital driven war machine. The capital: Land stolen from the Indigenous built on the backs of Human Capital, slaves stolen from Africa. It suddenly dawned on me that the great American pastime was a metaphor for this very American ideology…. move the ball 10 yards at a time and claim new turf. I think they described the dividing of America using 22 yard chains to survey each plot of land. Chains on the slaves, chains on mother nature, chains on our minds.
Then I tuned into Hard Knock Radio and as always blown away by the thought provoking talks. It blew my mind that hours before I was thinking something plausible but now experts are actually explaining it with evidence. Thank you! I love your show Davey D and always love listening to Dave on “The Collision”. I am a sustainer for KPFA and I encourage anyone who wants real journalism without the strings and chains that capitalism demands.
